I love vintage advertising, the colors, the silhouettes, the ideas they offer. One of my favorites are the late 1940s Forstmann wool ads. I think they have the best color coordination ideas! Instant outfit inspiration! When I found this one in particular, I was really excited because I happen to have quite a few pieces in these shades of green, brown, and yellow or gold. Using the color palates in the advertisement and taking a few queues from the weather outside, I made up an outfit appropriate for the season.
In making up my version of this look, I took inventory of what I had at hand. Everything had to be something I already owned, no shopping or making of something new just to suit the ad. One reason why I wanted to work with what I already had was because I like to think a lady back then could have been inspired by this ad and used what she had to make her own version of this look.
Lucky me, I chose a good ad to recreate because I had at hand already a green suit blazer that was a very good match as well as a brown wool skirt from another suit. Over it a yellow wool swing coat. I also had a green felt hat and golden gloves. Although I had the gloves to match, I chose brown because the gloves did not quite work with the coat . . And I was not ditching the coat for this look.
Overall, I am really happy with this look! I love the colors together and what is more I could add this look to my capsule wardrobe I made up in the fall using many of the same colors - greens, browns, and golds. You can see more of those looks here. I may just have to make a winter version of that capsule wardrobe.
