A 1940s Hair Tutorial and How to Wear Hats With It

Welcome back to more hair raising adventures and today I am showing you how to do another 1940s appropriate hair style based off an original photograph. For this hair style, the hair is curled and then secured to the sides of the head with hair combs. A nice thing about this hair style is that it can be styled for both day and evening and can be styled with a multitude of different hats - I will be showing you three hats and also a hair flower for more dressy occasions. If you are in need for a hair style that is not too terribly fussy and need one that can work for a whole day (and maybe a whole weekend with enough hair spray) then this look would work really well for you. Below, the original photograph and my inspiration: To get started, you will need curled hair, use any method that you like. I use pin curling to get my hair to curl. Kitchen Florals

I am really happy how this project turned out. The pattern is a new acquisition to the hoard and one I picked up over the fall from Vivaciouslady Vintage. It's a simple pattern which served the large, bold floral really well. The floral is from Telalinda Fabrics and already a favorite print because I have the red colorway of this print already. The pattern had an option of a large collar and cuff set and naturally I had to incorporate that into my look, the collar and cuffs were made from an old pillowcase that had seen better days. I re purposed them into what you see here. I like to call my collar and cuffs a project for make and mend for victory because they now have a new lease on life. To wear in the kitchen, I made the accordion apron from Eva Dress Patterns and I love it. It's a unique pattern and very simple to execute. Although it looks complicated, it really came together fast and easy. I cut my pieces according to the given grain lines to get this very cool chevro

A 1940 Sweetheart Dress

This was one of my winter makes that I am more than happy about. The pattern was a 1940 Eva Dress pattern that features a sweetheart style neckline, a skirt back gathered into a lower bodice back yoke, and cute little puffed sleeves. Being an early 40s dress, there are not shoulder pads required but can be added if desired. The neckline is finished with a bias facing. Another charming feature of this dress is that the bodice upper back does wrap over to the front to help create the shape of the neckline. Overall, I would consider this one an intermediate pattern as it is not quite beginner friendly but not totally advanced either. The fabric I used was a soft and drapey rayon from Telalinda fabrics that I found in the remnant section. What a find! This one is one of my true favorites thus far and I have already made it up twice, once in this print you are now seeing here and also in a green solid rayon which will be photographed . . . .Eventually. I will get to it some day! Promise!
