Celebrating the 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July! I enjoy this holiday because it is my best opportunity and excuse to wear red, white, and blue. To celebrate the day I chose a light blue shirtwaist dress I made from a 1943 Eva Dress Pattern. This dress pattern is one of my favorites and one I have made up many, many times already. To make it more personal to me, I added my initials using dead stock 1930s embroidered letters. I wanted the letters to look nice, so I splurged on buying some readymade vintage ones. I am so happy I did too! These turned out better than anything I could have made.

For my apron, my grandma made that in the 1950s. She hand embroidered the waistband, hem and pocket. When I got the apron, it needed repairs badly! Thankfully the damage was confined to rips along the grain and cross grain so no large holes or strange jagged lines. I was able to sew the rips together and the end result, I think, looks pretty good. I feel so lucky to have something like this from her.

To help celebrate the day, I made my mom's watermelon basket bowl. She always made this fruit dish when entertaining in the summer and I hope to keep the tradition going.
